Did You Look Like This Today Too?

1963

When I was young I lived in a small  village 3 miles from the English side of the Scottish Border. Most of those years I can remember having a good supply of snow during every winter  and long warm holidays in the summer. They certainly were not the dripping wet summers we are experiencing now.

There were definate distinctions between one season and the next. Plants didn't flower twice as they can often be seen to do now.  So whatever is happening to the weather it is nothing like it was

when I was a child. As for the current snow falls.  Yes, it has been more prolonged and severe than any we have had in recent years in Britain.  Nevertheless, in comparison with 1947 and 1963 it is a sprinkling.  Where my Father worked he was able to hang his coat on the top of a telegraph pole and that is no exaggeration.  The village was cut off for so long, food suppl;ies had to be dropped by helicopter.  The village Doctor came for emergencies only and when he was compelled to visit he came over the Northumbrian Moors on skis.  Now that was a very hard winter and we endured that and others not quite so severe without all the disruption we see now. However,  we all seemed to have a different way of life then, of course, and people did not commute as they do now.  Shops were local as were the other facilities and most people did not own a car.

So what am I saying here?  Well nothing really just that we are cushioned to a greater degree, from the physical hardships in our materialistic society, than we have ever been before.  The snow will eventually go and we will all get over it but one thing that will not change will be the relentless 24 hour news channels that remind us and encourage us to believe that the world has almost come to it's very end because some snow has fallen in Britain!!   I think this is what I looked like when I ventured out today .... Scary or what?

Siberian trees - full of precious metals!!!
Scientists from Alan-Ude, Irkutsk and Novosibirsk have found that evergreen trees growing above Iron Ore Deposits in Siberia are drawing up dissolved metals from the soil.  Once the tree has died and rotted the metal deposits are deposited on to the forest floor.  One ton of rotting wood residue is potentially able to produce five grams of platinum, 200 milligrams of gold and three kilograms of silver....Not bad eh!

Really Interesting Stuff

Did our Ancestors Make Superglue?

Probably : YES

At Rhineland Museum in Germany, a chief restorer set about researching a Roman Official's, parade helmet.
As he carefully sawed through the decorative silver laurel leaves attached to the helmet, the heat from the fine saw caused the laurel leaves to peel off.  Underneath was found thread like traces of glue.  Analysis revealed the tenacious adhesive was made from Bitumin and Beef Fat.  The helmet had lain on the bed of the Rhine River for at least 1,500 years.

Really Interesting Stuff - Probably Best to Stay at Home and Die of Boredom Then !!!

Relax and enjoy playing golf

(Nice picure eh!)

Minibreak Hazards?
The minibreak, a long holiday weekend  promoted by the European travel industry as a quick and easy way to relax away from life’s stresses, may  “do more harm than good,” reports the Guardian newspaper of London
According to cardiologist Dr. Walter Pasini, of the WHO, packing, rushing to an airport, and flying, along with changes in temperature, food, and time zones, contribute to exhaustion and are potentially dangerous. The body takes a few days to relax and adjust to a different climates and life-styles, if there is not enough time for this to happen,  circulation and sleep patterns are adversely affected. Dr. Pasini’s study “found that those who snatched a few days away were 17% more likely to have a heart attack and 12% more likely to have a car crash than those who took a week or more off,” the  message is not that short breaks are inherently dangerous, but that people should take care and prepare properly. People who take short break holidays  and race around trying to pack everything into a few days is not a good way to relax.
In fact, it can be very stressful.     (Well .. there's always somebody ready to be negative.. wot the hell, go, enjoy yourself and have fun)

Really Interesting Stuff - by Sandkat. Crocodile Babies Rock

While still eggs - baby crocodiles communicate with each other in order to synchronise their hatching - reports The Times of London.   Nile Crocodiles were recorded just before they were about to hatch, these calls were then played to another batch of eggs.  On hearing the recorded noises of the  un-born crocs, the group of eggs started to answer and moved  more frequently, synchronising  their hatching to within 10 minutes of each other.  Other sets of eggs left in silence or exposed to random noises did not fine-tune their hatching.

Really Interesting Stuff About the British Public - Oh! And Gardening

How good is that? Of course, the British populace, for the most part, all verge on the eccentric so this is by no means unusual behaviour, but then I think that is a well known fact anyway. Here is another fact you many not know ........... In an article published by "Psychology Today", the habit of gardening is promoted as being apparently very good for you. Even if you can only manage a small amount, it is better for your health than previously realised. Why? Well, research has shown that when certain strains of soil-borne micro bacteria are ingested (why you would make a concentrated effort to eat soil escapes me at this moment in time) or inhaled, they "sharply" stimulate the human immune system. Which means ingesting soil components could be as healthy for you as eating some of the very best plants grown in it.
